Lay and Lie

Lay and Lie의 차이점 잘 이해하고 계신가요?

전 lay, lie 쓸 때마다 내가 맞게 쓰는 건가 헷갈리더라고요.

우선 lay와 lie의 사전 상의 definition을 알보죠. 

 

Lay (transitive verb; 타동사): to put or set down; to place for rest or sleep

Lie (intransitive verb; 자동사): to be or to stay at rest in a horizontal position

• She had lain down to rest. 

Lay는 무언가를 내려놓는 것이고, lie는 (직접) 눕는 것을 나타 낼 때 쓰이는 동사인데, lie의 과거형이 lay의 현재형과 spelling 이 같아서 헷갈리네요. 미국 원어민들도 헷갈려하는 단어이니 너무 걱정하지 마시고, 이번 기회에 확실히 알아두면 되겠네요.
