오늘 아프리카 편을 마무리하며 새롭게 안 사실은 중국이 아프리카에 그렇게 많은 투자를 하는지는 이번에 알았네요. "All the Chinese want is the oil, the minerals, the precious metals, and the markets. This is an equitable government-to-government relationship, but we will see increasing tension between local populations and the Chinese workforces often brought in to assist with the big projects."(136) 아프리카의 지형적 조건은 저주에 가까울 만큼 안 좋지만, 또 다른 한편 축복의 땅인건 엄청만 지하 자원을 보유하고 있다는 거라네요. 서방과 중국의 투자로 상업적 발전을 이루고 있지만, 정작 국민들의 삶은 별로 좋아지지 않고 있다네요. 하루 빨리 서민층의 생활 조건이 나아지면 좋겠네요.
